Another dropped ball

Last Tuesday I sent a resume and on Wednesday, I called the company to verify receipt. The email went directly to the company ceo.

He got on the line and told me the next step is an interview with the HR department, 7 time zones away.

I waited all day Thursday and half the day on Friday: no phone call here. And no email from HR, asking me when I am available and what time, for a phone interview.

Yesterday I sent that same gent an email, telling him I never heard from Hr and would he know when the interview by phone is scheduled for — these high end execs all have calendars, right? — it’s now after 2 pm and I never got a hollaback from the ceo.

I consider this a dropped ball. Common sense and courtesy has it, does it not, that you email first and ask when the candidate is avaiable for a phone interview?

I did some research and googled; this is a very “young” company with 2 offices: one here and one overseas — and their LinkedIn lists about 12 positions in the office stateside — but no names are attached to each position.

Wow. Are they looking to hire 12 people (including the job I applied for — that one has no name attached to it, either) or are these positions currently filled but the person’s name is just not filled in?

This company oddly reminds me of a start up I worked for briefly way back in 2000.  The company was fine — until it sort of exploded and the director of management hired many many new people (that’s a story in itself). That’s when everything imploded and went down.

There was nobody to supervise and monitor these new bodies (it was an unspoken “there’s your seat; welcome aboard. Get the hell to work”) and there was no routine for each person. IT’s hard to describe but this was sort of like a reverse lifeboat drill.

That company was sold to some other concern several months later and the parent company itself went out of business — securities fraud.

Anyway, I consider this a dropped ball.  If you can’t follow through on a phone interview, wow…. what can I tell ya?

  1. And to me, if your boss says to Do Something, you DO it. Right now.

    By rights he should have emailed me when he forwarded my resume to HR and told me what the procedure was going to be; I find this out when I call??

    Is this the way these “young” businesses do things? To me, it is still courtesy and to me it is still following procedure; I don’t care how old you are or how old you are not.

  2. I hate this. They should get back either way but rarely do. Seems the HR people are the idiots but I think often it’s the head people.

  3. Another maddening waste of time. THat’s what kills me — it’s another week gone and another week without work.

    I am guessing they changed their mind about me or the job was filled already. Either way, they should still say. Gah.

  4. When there are 3.7 applicants for every job, and my guess is that a lot of job announcements are just fishing expeditions, employers feel like they can be picky. We were supposed to be recruiting for engineering jobs where I work, but our HR department is 2 time zones away, and job announcements that were supposed to be out in February haven’t been posted yet, which means that the new people won’t be here until at least September.

    California to Germany is a nine time zone difference, but from New Jersey, you’d have to go to Moscow or close to it.

    On a macroeconomic level, we are back to 1981 levels of workforce participation, but a lot of jobs that people might have gotten then have disappeared. I’ve watched the ranks of admin professionals just wither over my career, with the work that they used to do pushed back onto professional staff.

  5. Who he hires? Entirely his choice and entirely up to him.

    But just think about this one: what does that say about somebody’s style of management and style of communication, that he won’t even hollaback and say “Sorry but we filled the job” or ‘we decided to go into another direction; we are intensifying our search”? Either one would have been fine.

    And not to mention it’s just plain puerile and rude, not to reply back to an email. Would you do that in a social setting, guy?

    This is the business equivalent of letting a guest ring your doorbell…and not answer the doorbell when they ring away.

    IT just slays me how primitive some people are.And he’s not the first one who has done this; it’s happened quite a few other times. I guess NOT responding to your email is now the new “don’t call us, man, we’ll call you.”

  6. There has been a huge decline in civility over the last 50 years or so, so the primitiveness doesn’t surprise me. From his point of view, his time is a lot more valuable than your time. This doesn’t make it right, but that’s the dynamic here.

    I always wonder whether productivity-enhancing tools really work It would seem trivial to produce a form letter for rejecting candidates. The one that I get runs something like:

    I. A. Madness
    666 Looney Bin Road
    Washington, DC 25103

    Dear Ms. Madness,
    Thank you for applying for position XYZZY-666. Someone else was selected for the position.
    We wish you well in your future job-seeking.

    Sincerely yours,

    H.R. Stonewaller

    Consequently, my rule is that if I am not called for an interview within two weeks of making the selection list and don’t hear within two weeks after that, it’s time to move on to concerning myself with the next job.

    It might seem like it is easier and quicker to decide whether or not an admin person is hired, but not necessarily. When you consider the fully-burdened labor rate (salary plus cost of benefits plus overhead/profit and other indirect costs), it is not a lot more expensive to hire an engineer than a secretary, and this might explain a lot of the “credentialing creep” that we have seen over the last few decades. I believe that you told us about being hired for a job where you were clearing out a lot of crap from some office, doing some sort of paper-shuffling, and were let go at the end of the paper shuffle rather than it turning into a permanent job. Even not offering benefits doesn’t change the equation much if NO ONE gets benefits.

  7. I hate the waiting either way. Like me, I had an interview last week and nothing yet, but last time it took them a few weeks to call for a third interview. But everyday that passes I get more and more concerned I was rejected once again and it depresses me because I really want this job.

  8. A friend of mine told me to phone that company and find out what the deal is. “FFS,” she said, “you need a job! Call these people and get the lowdown.”

    I did. I called right before closing today.

    Here is the outcome of the call:

    Receptionist: Good afternoon, XYZ.
    Me: Is the office administrator job still available?
    Receptionist: Yes it is.
    Me: I am calling in regard to a telephone interview with HR that is pending. To date, I have not heard from that individual and no date is set yet for the interview. Who would I speak to?
    Receptionist: I will find out. Who is calling? [I gave my name] One moment…

    On hold for 20 seconds then this:

    Receptionist:That position is filled.

    I said thanks and hung up.

    Funny now that she has my name and hollared to whoever it was — probably the guy who I spoke to last Wednesday — the job is filled, eh?

    I tend not to believe these people. Call me paranoid or cynical but I don’t. They have cried wolf once too many times.

    How purile and vulgar, not to mention just plain wrong. Nobody emails me to tell me otherwise? Why did you bother to even TELL me you allegedly sent my resume on to HR and that she’d call me?

    And even when he said this to me – this is the CEO of the company I spoke with – I somehow got the idea that the phone call wasn’t going to happen. Looks like my gut was right.

    5 years ago, this kind of bullshit was a rare occurance. I can recall exactly 2 kind of far-outish interviews and over the course of 3 months, I went on 20 interviews before I got an offer. That was about 2 interviews a week so it was okay.

    What happened last week – now now seems to be the norm.

    And with odds like these, how are we supposed to find work???? How do we beat these odds? Anybody know?

  9. I wish I knew. All I know is years ago I got jobs with no problems, but now finding a decent job is like pulling teeth. The worst though is when you get rejected and find out the company is having a hard time finding someone. This happened to me, I applied for a job I fit to a t, and got rejected. Yet they claim they couldn’t find anyone, but then I called them asking why are they on Linked-In claiming they can’t find anyone yet didn’t even interview me? I suspect they did this to hire a foreign worker.

  10. They also could have done this to hire a student on the cheap, or they hired somebody desparate to work for nothing…or it could be a friend of an employee, somebody’s friend or spouse…Christ only knows who really got the job.

  11. Could be, which is sad. I am seeing so many fulltime volunteer jobs and they are listed as such. I was on Linked-In and saw a company I interviewed with and they were hiring fulltime volunteer jobs. They wanted someone to work 40 hours for free.

  12. The more I think about this entire puerile incident, the more I’m convinced this guy was lying.

    He never forwarded my resume to one blessed person. IF he did and this was on the up and up, why did I not hear from that HR person?

    And indeed if this is what he did, wow — what is the sense and purpose of it? to deter me from calling him again? Won’t work — I did contact you and I was well within my rights of doing so: I was told by him that HR would call; they did not call; therefore, I emailed him asking him What Happened To The Call and does he know when the call would occur?

    When it was close of business on Wednesday, that is when I should have stopped the presses on this thing: email him at 5 pm and tell him HR never emailed you asking for a date and time to contact you for a phone interview.

    What am I supposed to do? Wait by a phone, hoping she will call? This made no sense, any of it.

    And like I said, if this kind of mess keeps up, how am I expected to get a job and get myself back to work? NONE of this is working; nothing is panning out. I seem to encounter one dead end after another.

  13. Madness, the oversupply of labor is something that is starting to backfire and will be a continuing problem. While we can blame a lot on outsourcing, the reality is also technological advances. For example I worked in public relations and advertising and many years ago you could have two people do one job. Now though with technology you can have one person do that job as well as other ones. One person could be the copywriter, another dealing with the client, another person creating the graphics, etc and now often one person does all of these jobs and more.

    Also, back when I was in high school the idea was that any degree was good for a job. So I would see classmates major in things like womens studies or sociology or many other majors like these. Many did find jobs but many didn’t and ended up going into another field. They found out employers want to hire people with other degrees.

  14. If there was a way I could start a business where I’d have a guarantee I’d have a good chunk of change to live on each week with no trouble, I’d do it in a heartbeat.

    Everything is economy driven. And the rents are too high in my very local area to rent a brick and mortar store and open something up downtown.

    (and the only businesses in town that are opening are little offbeat restaurants and delis. There’s a kiddie crafts shop/store/school that seems to be holding its own and cool beans for the owner.. One of the eateries has a pretty good draw of high school kids; it’s good for the kids — they now have a relatively safe place to socialize — and good for the business owner)

  15. Either they don’t tell you that you didn’t get the job, or they write to you months later to rub in that fact. About this time last year, I applied for a job as a petroleum engineer in Utah. It’s not my field, but close to is because I am a chemical engineer. I had the interview on the phone from Germany, where it was easier and cheaper for me to call them because I had unlimited long distance to the U.S.

    Based on what I heard during the interview, I didn’t think that I was the best candidate because I have a lot to learn about petroleum leases and how they are bought up and simply sat on (I told them that the lease costs should be raised every year by 50-100% to make it more expensive to hold the lease, thereby encouraging development, and the leaseholder who develops the property could be given a somewhat more favorable royalty schedule to compensate).

    I didn’t get the job, and knew that in November, when I got the flush letter. Imagine my surprise when I got yet another flush letter for the same job and same announcement today.

  16. This is all a game — for God’s Sake — what are we all? the butt of somebody’s joke???

    I just don’t get it: is this some kind of folly or shits and giggles to take a job candidate on a damn ride to nowhere and wild goose chase??

    All he had to do was say “That job has been filled. Sorry” and he would have gotten rid of me in one fell swoop when I called there last Wednesday.

    But instead you gave me blatantly false information. That’s real nice and a real grownup thing to do.

    All I know is I was told that HR would call me and when I got no call, I emailed him, asking what was what. When you’re told somebody’s calling, you tend to take that statement as true and at face value, no?

    If they don’t set up a job interview there and then, write the whole thing off. Cross them off your list and move on. That’s what I think I should do from now on.

    It would be prudent too, to google and investigate the company before you even bother to send a resume. Get all the info you can from everywhere — and have a good look at it — and if you have to, go TO the company itself and have a look ( Google Street View will only show you what the building looks like). It’s every man and woman for herself.

  17. Dude, you might remember but I once went on an interview where the guy then told me there was no job but he wanted to meet me. Huh? I’m really not that exciting that he had to go out of his way to meet me. This was at a radio station and I had previously worked at their competitor before they switched formats.

  18. NWP: he wasted your time.

    It’s the end of the world as we know it. You simply cannot trust an interviewer anymore — there is no more guarantee that an interview will be exactly that: an interview.

    The biggest waste of time interview: this was a bit over a year ago. It was a good ride from my house; it took me 45 minutes to get there.

    I spent 2 and a half hours there. guy who owned the company never informed me in advance that I’d be there that long.

    He spent the majority of the time giving me the history of the job position…and what happened to every admin he had who worked there.[“…and after she spent 4 years with Unberage, Malfoy, Krum and Snape, she began working here. She didn’t have enough experience but I hired her anyway….” When he was done, I knew everything about every admin he had working there, except her SSN and what her first words were when she began to talk. Please]

    What gives???

    It also took him 3 weeks after the fact to tell me no.

    About a month ago, he had another ad running. This time he wanted a part timer to have the job.
